A good story is the basis to winning the first prize in a writing contest. However, you must follow the rules to be considered for the prize. Failure to meet the standards will get your work disqualified from the writing contest. If the beginning sentences have been phrased a certain way, ensure you stick to that format. It is also important before you begin writing to think of as many ideas as possible. This will give you much flexibility when you begin writing and you can easily write on the idea you feel you can express well. You should also ensure the ideas flow and are informative to the reader.
It is important to remember the first paragraph is the marketing phrase of your writing. The majority of readers will decide whether to continue reading after the first paragraph. Therefore, you should make the first paragraph as informative and interesting as possible. In order to phrase your writing well, you should analyze earlier stories that have won in previous writing competition in order to have the right impression of what the judges are looking for in your story. Your story should be flawless with no grammatical, punctuation or spelling mistakes. This is because the presence of errors will make your story uninteresting and of low standard.
Before you enter any short story competition, you should ensure you are well prepared and confident. You should try as much as possible to avoid convincing phrases because they make the reader assume you are not sure of what you are saying. Hence, you should make your sentences informative instead of persuasive.
