Microsoft SharePoint is also referred to as Microsoft SharePoint Technologies and Products and generally are just as SharePoint. It is a software platform which has been developed with the understanding that your businesses can be run successfully only when individuals and teams are able to share their knowledge efficiently. This definition includes all the software bundles from Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) to the current Microsoft SharePoint 2010.Also included is Microsoft SharePoint Designer, used to customize and make new SharePoint solutions.

Microsoft has developed SharePoint using a single server for knowledge sharing and web publishing. Also it includes business intelligence tools such as blogs, wiki pages, website development, web portals, web forums, content management systems, internet search engines, etc. However, Microsoft does not intend for SharePoint being used as a replacement for file servers or for a single solution replacement for other technologies. It merely markets SharePoint to play certain roles in a business oriented environment. These roles are usually profiled as ”Collaboration, Processes, and People”.

The web-based interface of SharePoint can be accessed by you using your favorite browser. However, only IE, designated as level 1 by Microsoft, is fully integrated and can be used optimally and unleash the full functionality and workability of SharePoint.
